The moment you take that final breath and let yourself sink beneath the surface, something shifts. The world becomes slower, simpler, softer. Everything loud—everything that pulls, pushes, or demands—fades away.
Surfing in Bali: Best Waves, Secret Spots; What to Wear
Bali isn’t just a destination—it’s a surfer’s paradise.
With warm tropical water, consistent swell, and a laid-back surf culture, the Island of the Gods attracts wave chasers from around the world. Whether you're a beginner paddling out for the first time or a seasoned surfer chasing barrels, Bali has something for everyone.
Best Beginner Surf Spots
If you're new to surfing, head to Batu Bolong in Canggu or Kuta Beach. These sandy-bottomed breaks offer mellow, rolling waves that are ideal for learning. You'll find surf schools lining the beach, friendly instructors, and plenty of space to practice.
Intermediate to Advanced Waves
For more experienced surfers, Uluwatu delivers world-class left-hand reef breaks with long, fast rides. Padang Padang (a.k.a. the Balinese Pipeline) is famous for its hollow waves and picture-perfect barrels. Keramas on the east coast is another gem, known for its powerful right-handers and sunrise sessions.
Hidden Gems
Escape the crowds and head north to Medewi, where long left-hand waves make for cruisy rides. Or try Balian and Serangan, both offering reliable surf and a more relaxed vibe.

What to Wear Surfing in Bali
The tropical sun is no joke. A long-sleeve surf suit offers UPF protection, stays put in the waves, and gives you confidence without sacrificing style. Our Sulawesi and Mentawai surf suits are perfect for the Bali surf—sculpting, secure, and sustainable. For extra warmth or dawn patrols, the limestone neoprene spring suits are a lightweight game-changer.

Surf Packing Tips
- Reef-safe zinc sunscreen
- Reusable water bottle
- Travel-friendly fin key
- Wax for tropical water
- A dry bag for your phone and valuables
Whether you're here for a few weeks or a full surf season, Bali’s magic is in its waves—and what you wear in them. Explore, surf, repeat.

Years ago, when I was learning to surf out at Kuta Reef, I had one of those days. You know the kind—when everything is happening at once. The reef felt sharp and closer than it should, the sets rolled in faster than I could read them, and I was still learning how to duck dive without panic. But the real challenge wasn’t the waves.
We weren’t made to move in straight lines. We weren’t meant to wake with the same energy every morning, push through fatigue, or stretch ourselves thin across endless to-do lists. And yet, so many of us do—ignoring the quiet calls from our body to slow down, soften, and be still.
